  5. README.1ST -- This file.

  8.                and other anti-virus technology.

  12. INVRCBLE.EXE -- A self-installing module for InVircible.

  15.                ***  IMPORTANT  ***
  16. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING ADDENDUM  BEFORE USING
  17.                 INVIRCIBLE SHAREWARE!
  18.                         
  19. The following information is an addendum to the
  20. InVircible online help when used with
  21. the InVircible Shareware product of Sela Consultants
  22. Corporation (S.C.C.).
  23.  
  24. ***  Before installing InVircible, any "anti-
  25. virus" TSR must be disabled and not reactivated.
  26. Anti-virus TSRs are not compatible with
  27. InVircible's operational requirements.  InVircible
  28. does not require a TSR to be effective!
  29.  
  30. ***  The INSTALL program of InVircible stores the
  31. InVircible programs on your hard drive in the disk
  32. partition and directory of your choosing.  The
  33. INSTALL program adds to your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  34. executions of the InVircible programs V-INIT and
  35. VGUARD.   Do not remove the executions of these
  36. programs from your AUTOEXEC.BAT.  Removal of these
  37. program executions compromises the protection
  38. offered by InVircible which requires periodic
  39. checking of your C:, D: (if D: exists), and E: (if
  40. E: exists) disk partitions.   You may add
  41. additional detection capabilities to selected BAT
  42. files using the InVircible INSTALL program's
  43. (B)atches menu option.  You must add VGUARD
  44. executions for disk partitions beyond E: that are
  45. not network server partitions.  
  46.  
  47. ***  After completing the InVircible Install
  48. procedure, you are urged to copy your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  49. file to a file that we suggest you call
  50. SHUTDOWN.BAT.  Using your text editor, remove all
  51. lines except for those executing the InVircible
  52. programs V-INIT and VGUARD.   Before re-booting
  53. (e.g., a warm-boot) or turning off the power,
  54. execute this SHUTDOWN.BAT file as one last check
  55. of your system for viruses.  This will detect boot-
  56. sector and other viruses that enter your system
  57. and activate after the AUTOEXEC.BAT executions (or
  58. later executions you run) of V-INIT and VGUARD.
  59. The suggested SHUTDOWN.BAT file will enable you to
  60. detect boot sector viruses at a point from which
  61. recovery will be with less effort than if you wait 
  62. until after your next hard disk boot.
  63.  
  64. ***  DOS 5.0 or Central Point PC Tools' users are
  65. urged to consider the usefulness of taking
  66. advantage of the MIRROR command, which saves the
  67. File Access Table (FAT) for the disk partitions
  68. you specify.  If you use the MIRROR command in the
  69. AUTOEXEC.BAT file, copy the UNFORMAT command to a
  70. secure diskette.
  71.  
  72. *** DR-DOS 6.0's users are urged to consider the
  73. usefulness of taking advantage of the DISKMAP
  74. command, which performs the same functions as PC
  75. Tools' MIRROR command.  If you use of the DISKMAP
  76. command in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, copy the
  77. UNDELETE command to a secure diskette.
  78.  
  79. ***  The (B)atches menu option of the INSTALL
  80. program will not insert a VIRTEST execution for
  81. BAT files that are less than four lines long.
  82.  
  83. *** Users of monochrome laptops & notebooks may
  84. need to place a MODE MONO command before the V-
  85. INIT and VGUARD executions in the AUTOEXEC.BAT
  86. file.  This is sometimes needed to supersede the
  87. VGA color default of some BIOS chips, especially
  88. those used by some DELL laptops.
  89.  
  90. *** DR-DOS 6.0's users that create a Stacker
  91. partition as D:  and that also create a standard
  92. FAT partition as E: will need to add a line in
  93. AUTOEXEC.BAT that is identical to the VGUARD
  94. execution for C:, except that "E:" appears instead
  95. of "C:".  Any DOS user that uses "D:" for other
  96. than a hard disk FAT partition who also has an
  97. "E:" hard disk FAT partition will need to follow
  98. this advice directed to DR-DOS 6.0 users!
  99.  
  100. ***  DOS users with only one or two hard disk
  101. partitions (C: and D:) and that use the DOS device
  102. driver DRIVER.SYS to add additional definitions
  103. for the A: or B: floppy drive, will find that the
  104. VGUARD execution in AUTOEXEC.BAT may ask for a
  105. diskette to be inserted for floppy drives "D:" (if
  106. only one hard disk partition is defined) and "E:"
  107. (if one or two hard disk partitions are defined).
  108. To eliminate the requirement to insert a diskette
  109. for VGUARD in this specific use of DRIVER.SYS, use
  110. FDISK to create additional hard disk partitions so
  111. that you have at least three hard disk partitions
  112. defined.
  113.  
  114. ***  The references in the online help
  115. that describe transfers of the InVircible
  116. VCARE Authorization Key between the InVircible
  117. diskette and the hard disk do not apply to
  118. InVircible Shareware.  Recovery and disinfection are
  119. enabled only in the InVircible Lite and InVircible
  120. Professional products.  The manual delete-and-replace
  121. option is the only virus removal technique provided for
  122. with InVircible Lite.
  123.  
  124. ***  Repeated viewing of the InVircible online
  125. help (or readings of the printed manual) will
  126. provide you with the background you need to handle
  127. an actual virus attack with confidence.  The least
  128. effective time to learn what is in online help or
  129. the printed manual is after a virus has attacked!
